This upgrade service fixes the most significant problems of the MXL 992 circuit:

• high input capacitance of the JFET, which needlessly reduces sensitivity and adds noise
• improper JFET bias, allowing premature distortion
• overly high polarization voltage, which can cause capsule collapse and audio cut-outs during vocal transients
• microphonic signal-path capacitors can add noise and distortion
• capsule/circuit mismatch creates a bright/harsh/thin frequency response

Your MXL 992 must be in good working order. If the mic is dead, or noisy, or intermittent, then this mod will not fix it. 

About the Mod

This mod replaces the most critical components in the signal path and supporting DC power circuit:

• The JFET is replaced by an audiophile grade part, selected for low noise and low input capacitance, biased to minimize distortion and maximize SPL. 
• Signal-path capacitors are replaced with high-quality film components.
• Signal-path resistors are replaced with 1% tolerance metal film components.
• Internal wiring is upgraded to oxygen-free copper.

The mod service incorporates all of the upgrades from our discontinued , plus a few extras (most critically including the EQ mod to correct the microphone's frequency response).
