Our comprehensive upgrade for the Avantone CV-12 replaces the entire signal path within the microphone -- capsule, circuit, tube, and transformer -- resulting in a world-class tool that rivals commercial mics costing $2500.

About the Mod

The CV-12 contains a typical Chinese tube mic circuit, the so-called "CCDA" topology, with a transformer whose turns ratio is too high. The capsule voicing tends to have an exaggerated top end, and a thin bottom end, giving the mic a somewhat harsh sound.

None of those components survive the upgrade process. We install our RK-12 capsule, which is voiced like the AKG CK-12. We install a new tube circuit, based on what was used in the vintage Telefunken ElaM 251 (arguably the most famous vocal mic ever made). Unlike the original circuit, ours is a true single-triode design. We implement it with premium components, including a custom made output capacitor that was chosen after auditioning a dozen different parts.

How it Works

After you buy this service, see our for instructions on packing and shipping your mic. Be sure to print the Service Request form linked from that page.

Send us the microphone and power supply. It is not necessary, nor recommended, to send us the shockmount or cables or case. But it is critical to pack the mic and power supply carefully; both are heavy enough to damage themselves if the box is dropped.

The typical turnaround time is 5 business days. We can provide more detailed turnaround time estimates after you purchase the service.

Because this upgrade replaces the mic's entire signal path, it can be used on microphones whose capsule, tube, circuit, or audio transformer has failed. The upgrade does not replace the PSU, but we do offer various power supply replacement and upgrade options at additional cost, if your mic's PSU has failed or exhibits hum or noise problems.

Compatibility

This upgrade is compatible with the Avantone CV-12 and TnC ACM-1200. Both of these models have switches for pad and filter features; these switchable features will still work after the upgrade.
