Product Description

We offer a new upgrade service for the Rode NT2 microphone. It addresses the shortcomings identified by the mic's original designer, Jim Williams. It also upgrades numerous components that we've found to improve the sound of the mic:

  • We adjust the capsule polarization voltage. Some mics run at high voltage (70V), while most are too low (<40V). This change requires reworking part of the oscillator circuit and its voltage feed. The benefit of raising the capsule voltage to 60V (for those mics that are under-powered) is an audible increase in sensitivity, and an improvement in the signal to noise ratio.
  • The capsule power supply rail is upgraded to improve noise filtering. The stock circuit contains a wiring error that prevents it from correctly filtering noise.
  • We upgrade the main signal coupling capacitors to extend the mic's low frequency response and improve resolution.
  • We modify the mic's output circuit to reduce sensitivity to EMI/RFI from the cable, while also improving compatibility with long mic cables.
  • We rebuild the mic's input circuit to remove all capacitors from the signal path.
  • Most importantly, we replace the mic's capsule with a K47 or CK12 type (your choice), which re-voices the mic. The stock NT2 has a sharp high-frequency peak, e.g. +4 to +6dB @ 10kHz, which can make sources sound harsh and can push analog-digital converters into distortion. You can choose a K47 capsule for fast transient response and upper midrange presence, or a CK12 style for a "big vocal" sound (airy top end, rich bass, intimate sound even with larger working distance).

Compatibility

This mod is for the transformerless NT2 only. It will not work for the very early transformer-coupled NT2, nor the NT2A. If you are uncertain of compatibility, photos of your mic's circuit boards (both of them).

Limitations

We do not recommend this upgrade if your mic is broken. We cannot guarantee that this mod would repair a defective mic.

If your NT2 works, but is noisy when the high-pass filter is engaged: this is normal behavior. The HPF in the NT2 was not designed properly, and cannot be easily fixed. We disable the HPF mode entirely during the upgrade process.

How it works

After you buy this service, see our for instructions on packing and shipping your mic. Be sure to print the Service Request form linked from that page. Indicate your choice of capsule on the Service Request form's comments area.

The typical turnaround time is 5 business days. We can provide more detailed turnaround time estimates after you purchase the service.

If your mic is broken, noisy, or intermittent, this upgrade is NOT compatible and will not repair your microphone.

Costs

The mod service includes the parts, installation labor, and testing. Return shipping charges will be added during check-out.

Availability

This mod service is open to US residents only.
